Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a detailed examination procedure used to investigate abnormal findings from a Pap smear or to further evaluate any symptoms affecting the cervix, vagina, or vulva. Colposcopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that involves using a specialized instrument called a colposcope. This instrument magnifies and illuminates the vaginal and cervical tissues, allowing the healthcare provider to closely examine these areas and identify any abnormal cells or lesions.

How Colposcopy is Performed:

The procedure is typically done in a gynecologist’s office. You may be asked to empty your bladder before the exam and to remove any vaginal creams or medications that might interfere with the procedure

Procedure:

You will lie on an exam table with your feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina to allow access to the cervix.

Duration:

The entire procedure typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
